The Computer Science Department offers two majors: computer science and applied computer science.
As a department, we have articulated the mission of the computer science program as follows, aligned with and inspired by the mission for Hiram College. The mission of the computer science program is:
Students who enjoy the hands-on application of computers are naturally drawn to the applied computer science major. Hiram's program is designed for students who wish to enter careers in information technology, digital media, computer information systems and other technology-related fields.
Hiram College’s dual degree engineering program partners with Case Western Reserve University and Washington University to prepare students to be successful engineers by emphasizing a strong science core, problem solving and communication skills.
Physics knowledge – the study of energy, matter and how things work – is highly sought-after in today’s high-tech world. Hiram College physics majors are well prepared to pursue numerous tracks after Hiram including graduate study, teaching in the sciences or working in a high-tech career.
Math majors have an undeniable love for solving complex numeric problems and finding real-world uses for their efforts. The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to provide a challenging and rigorous undergraduate education in mathematics to include a demanding set of course requirements and extensive mentoring by faculty on academic topics, careers and graduate education.
Biology is an exciting field, allowing individuals to investigate and understand life processes at all levels including molecular, cellular, individual and ecological. The biology program at Hiram College provides students with the knowledge and experience to become professional biologists. With our emphasis on experiential learning and hands-on applications, coupled with close faculty mentoring relationships, Hiram's biology students develop the expertise to succeed in graduate programs and professional work environments in the modern life sciences.
