New this year, Connect2Complete is partnering with the existing Impact Peer Mentoring program whose benchmark is Strive for Pi, supporting students towards achieving a 3.14 GPA. AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, Alicia Jefferson, Coordinator of the Connect2Complete program is working under the auspices of Detra West, Associated Dean of Students and Director of Diversity and Inclusion.
Connect2Complete (C2C), a program of Campus Compact supported by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. C2C works with nine community colleges in Florida, Ohio and Washington to utilize peer mentoring and service- learning to support first year, first generation college students in achieving academic success and engaging with their peers, the college and the broader community. Hiram College is one of ten campuses in Ohio to be a part of this elite program.
As colleges experience increases in enrollment and significant budget shortfalls, they seek innovative ways to increase graduation rates while impacting the quality of student learning. Connect2Complete (C2C) is a program that leverages the most underutilized college resource – students themselves – in a new model for true student success. Students themselves are an incredibly under-utilized college resource. Mobilizing successful students in support of other students who face obstacles to completion helps peer advocates and mentees integrate academically and socially through key relationships and support networks, thereby influencing students' intentions to persist in college.
Peer advocates also work alongside students individually, in cohorts, and through social media platforms to support students in setting goals, making connections to college life, achieving academic success, navigating college systems, and linking to college services designed to help students be successful. Students participate in community-engaged learning activities in conjunction with credit-bearing leadership development courses and through projects coordinated by peer advocates and the campus community engagement office. Through community-engaged learning, a high quality learning experience promotes academic integration and performance, bolsters social competence, and empowers students to develop self-efficacy and autonomy. Together these outcomes combine to improve retention and the likelihood of completing a degree.

Hiram College's Connect2Complete program is seeking Peer Advocates for the 2013-14 academic year. If you enjoy helping others, are seeking a leadership opportunity, and looking for ways to make your resume stand out… this opportunity is for you! Peer Advocates support first year students by serving as a "go-to" person connecting them to campus/community resources, engaging them in Community Engagement projects, and by providing basic tools to address barriers to success!
Primary Peer Advocate duties include supporting/mentoring students, enrolling in a 1 credit "Peer Mentoring and Leadership" course, engaging students in community engagement, service-learning activities and other supportive/educational events/workshops, and completing all other program expectations (orientation, timesheets, monthly group meetings, etc…).
Peer Advocates must:
- Understand their role as a leader, mentor and role model
- Commit to 1 academic year of Peer Advocacy
- Be a sophomore or a junior
- Be in good academic standing with a 2.25 cumulative GPA or higher
- Have an interest in serving students and the community
- Have an ability to relate to students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
- Lead by example and be reliable
- Actively engage in all Peer Advocate and C2C student events
