The ASBH Cornerstone Award is the Society’s highest honor given to an institution. The Cornerstone Award recognizes outstanding, enduring contributions by an institution that has deeply enriched and/or helped shape the direction of the fields of bioethics and/or the medical humanities. The Center for Literature and Medicine is only the fifth institution to receive this award, joining the august company of The Hastings Center, the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and The MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.
This award recognizes the vision, passion, hard work and beautiful collaboration of the Center’s co-founders, Carol Donley (Hiram College Emerita Faculty) and Marty Kohn (Director of the Program in Medical Humanities at the Center for Ethics, Humanities and Spiritual Care, Cleveland Clinic). To commemorate this special moment, and to honor Carol and Marty, we have compiled some of the Center’s history and solicited reflections from many scholars, practitioners, and artists in whose careers and lives the Center for Literature and Medicine has been influential.
